Our History

Psalm 78:4

“We will not hide them from their descendants; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done.”

1873 Church

In 1870, by decree, Henry Walker, Jerry Gaither, and George Gaither, trustees in the making, purchased one acre of land from William and Lucretia Batchelor,  in an area called Providence,  in Wheaton, MD. In 1873, the image seen here was the first church building, which they named Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church, in honor of Richard Allen, founder of The African Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1880, the church was also the site of the first school for black people in the Wheaton area.

1951 Church

The 1951 church image seen here may have come to fruition because of the ongoing congregants concern about education from a growing youthful membership. These concerns may have inspired a vision for a new church that could handle the rigors of young members, perhaps even a youth center.
